National S’Mores Day - August 11

Did you know that a Girl Scout invented s’mores? It’s true!

In 1927, a recipe for "Some More" was published in Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts.

Celebrate your Girl Scout spirit on Monday, August 11, 2020 - it’s National S’Mores Day!!

How will you celebrate? If you have a fire pit, you could roast marshmallows and make s’mores by adding a piece of chocolate and sandwiching your chocolate and marshmallow between two graham crackers.  You could also try making them in the oven (just a few seconds under the broiler as an open face sandwich... add the top cracker when it comes out). You could experiment with making s’mores dip!

Maybe you would like to try some s’mores crafts!

S'mores SWAPS

SWAPS stands for "small or special whatchamacalit affectionately pinned somewhere" and Girl Scouts love to make and trade them.

To make these adorable s'mores SWAPS, all you need is some light brown foam or cardstock, some of a darker brown, a cotton ball, a safety pin, some glue, and some googly eyes (or a marker if you want to draw the eyes on).

S'mores Sign

To make this little cutie, you just need some popsicle sticks, some cardstock or foam, white paint, glue, a black magic marker, pink paint, a hole punch, and some yarn.  Make sure you cut one popsicle stick in pieces to serve as support structures on the back.

However you celebrate National S'mores Day, HAVE FUN!!

Junior Journey in a Day: Agent of Change

As many troops are moving to online meetings, it may be fun to attempt a journey.  Last fall, I hosted a Journey in a Day for Juniors to complete the Agent of Change journey in one day-long retreat.  The event was held in a library so we were able to research female change agents in the children's biography section... but girls could research via the internet (maybe watch YouTube videos) in place of that... Leaders, take a look at my plan and feel free to make it your own!

Tips for Going to the Park - by Logan

Logan and her mom have been participating in a series of park clean ups this spring.  Based on what they have found, Logan has put together some tips that you should follow when you are visiting your local parks.  Following these tips will help everyone enjoy themselves while keeping the parks clean. Logan's Tips:  On a picnic, bring Tupperware, not one-use plastic.  Pick up your dog's poop.  Bring a reusable water bottle.  If you do bring plastic, bring a trash bag with you.  Always bring reusable straws, spoons, forks, knives, and cups. Cleaning up before you leave the park helps protect the local wildlife and also ensures that the next visitors find a clean space to enjoy. A Girl Scout always leaves a place better than she found it! The Junior Girl Scouts in Troop 548 are completing their Bronze award project, which is focused on reducing waste in common spaces.
