Daisy Outdoor Art Maker

My Daisy has been working on a couple of badges since the Covid-19 shelter began.  One of the first she completed was the Outdoor Art Maker.

For Step 1, "See the Colors of Nature," Kyra sat on the back deck and painted a picture of our backyard.  The step called for watercolors, but we only had acrylics on hand... when sheltering, you have to be willing to adapt!

For Step 2, "Hear the Sounds of Nature," Kyra made maracas with my Brownie, Amber.  They used paper cups, washi tape, and plastic forks (taped in between the cups to make handles).  Kyra used rice in hers and Amber used dried beans in hers so they could compare the different sounds they made.

For Step 3, "Share Your Outdoor Art," Kyra made a series of "leave no trace" paintings that showed her being responsible in nature and she described each one to me.

These projects made for a very creative day for Kyra and she enjoyed expressing herself with art.  Click here to check out the requirements for this badge.

Previously, Kyra had completed the Buddy Camper badge... when paired with the Outdoor Art Maker badge and a take action project, Daisies complete the Daisy Outdoor Journey.  For her take action project, Kyra wanted to educate others about leave no trace.  She put together a little picture book about not littering while enjoying the outdoors.  She narrated it and we filmed it as a video to share with others via social media.

Junior Journey in a Day: Agent of Change

As many troops are moving to online meetings, it may be fun to attempt a journey.  Last fall, I hosted a Journey in a Day for Juniors to complete the Agent of Change journey in one day-long retreat.  The event was held in a library so we were able to research female change agents in the children's biography section... but girls could research via the internet (maybe watch YouTube videos) in place of that... Leaders, take a look at my plan and feel free to make it your own!

Tips for Going to the Park - by Logan

Logan and her mom have been participating in a series of park clean ups this spring.  Based on what they have found, Logan has put together some tips that you should follow when you are visiting your local parks.  Following these tips will help everyone enjoy themselves while keeping the parks clean. Logan's Tips:  On a picnic, bring Tupperware, not one-use plastic.  Pick up your dog's poop.  Bring a reusable water bottle.  If you do bring plastic, bring a trash bag with you.  Always bring reusable straws, spoons, forks, knives, and cups. Cleaning up before you leave the park helps protect the local wildlife and also ensures that the next visitors find a clean space to enjoy. A Girl Scout always leaves a place better than she found it! The Junior Girl Scouts in Troop 548 are completing their Bronze award project, which is focused on reducing waste in common spaces.
